Suzy Kormoczy won the 1958 French Open Singles title. The petite Hungarian was the first and only Jewish woman to win a Grand Slam Singles event.

Kormoczy was ranked the world’s #2 player in 1958, at the age of 34, winning eight of nine tournaments she entered, and reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon. The following year, she made Wimbledon’s ‘round of eight’, finishing sixth, and was the French Open Singles runner-up. Kormoczy made her first appearance in the world’s Top Ten ranking in 1947, and thereafter made the Top Ten list nine times over the next 14 years.

“Suzy K” is considered Hungary’s all-time greatest tennis star, of either gender, She captured six Hungarian national Singles titles and 10 Doubles or Mixed Doubles crowns. Just a 16-year old in 1940, she won the Hungarian Doubles and Mixed Doubles titles.
