Gold was honorary secretary of the British Amateur Athletic Board from 1962 to 1977, serving as leader of British Olympic teams of 1968, 1972, and 1976.

In 1976, Gold was elected vice president of the Board and president
of the European Track and Field Association. He was awarded England’s Commander of the British Empire for services to athletics and was knighted for his services to sports.
