DESCRIPTION:

As the first director of Physical Education at Smith College, Northhampton, Massachusetts, Senda Berenson introduced women's basketball in the United States. In 1901, she published the first book of rules for women's basketball.

Berenson held her position at Smith for 19 years and served as chairperson of the United States Women's Basketball Committee from 1905 to 1917. In 1985, she was one of three women, the first females, inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
