Canada's Petra Burka won the World Figure Skating Championship in 1965. A year earlier, she took the Bronze medal at the 1964 Winter Olympic Games. She also won Bronze medals at the 1964 and 1966 World Championships.
The Netherlands-born figure skater (emigrated to Canada in 1951) was the first woman to land a Triple Salchow in competition, achieving the feat en route to winning the 1965 Canadian Figure Skating Championship. She also won 1964 and 1966 Canadian titles.
Petra was named Canada's Outstanding Athlete of the Year in 1964, and twice, 1964 and 1965, was Canada's Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year.
Petra is the daughter of IJSHOF figure skating honoree (2010) Ellen Burka.
