A New York Times sportswriter 1969-2008, Murray Chass was recipient of the 2003 Baseball Writers Association of America's G. Taylor Spink Award, media's election to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

Chass was the "beat" writer for New York Yankees 1970-1986, after which he was appointed the Times' national baseball writer.

Chass joined the Associated Press in Pittsburgh after college. In 1963, the AP assigned him to its New York sports department. The assignment coincided with Major League Baseball's tumultuous "free agency" (players vs owners) legal battle, where he developed a reputation as the vanguard of sports legal and labor relations reporting.

Following his retirement from the Times, Chass segued to the Internet, where his columns on sports continue.
