Margalit Sonnenfeld taught and coached 125 amputee and paralyzed water sport athletes who competed in the Paralympics and Stoke-Mandeville Games from 1964 through 1992. Sonnenfeld’s athletes won 32 gold medals, 26 silvers, and 18 bronzes. Sonnenfeld immigrated to Israel in 1940 and, in the late 1950s, began to teach swimming to polio-stricken invalid children. With the establishment of the Ilan (now Israel) Sports Centre in Ramat Gan, she organized and coached competitive swimming classes for children as young as three years old, many of whom developed into international athletes.
