Lenny Silberman has dedicated his professional career to integrating sports, summer camp, technology, and Judaism, making a lasting impact on Jewish communities locally, nationally, and internationally.
In 1994, following 16 years with the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh, Silberman joined the Jewish Community Centers Association of North America (JCC Association) in New York. For 14 years, he served as the continental director of the JCC Maccabi Games, a program that engaged over 6,000 Jewish teenagers aged 13–16 annually, representing 110 North American JCCs and 10 countries. In addition to overseeing this flagship program, Silberman held the role of Vice President of Program Services, supervising the JCC Association’s camping, athletic, and teen consultants, as well as the JCC Maccabi Games and Israel programs.
From 1978 to 1993, Silberman served as Athletic Director and Director of Emma Kaufmann Camp, the residential camp of the Pittsburgh JCC. In 2008, he became CEO of the Henry Kaufmann Camps and Grounds, which supports 15 independent New York JCC/YM-YWHA day camps. Under his leadership, the organization has become the largest day camp network in the world, welcoming over 5,000 campers and staff daily across its three facilities.
Silberman’s influence extends beyond campgrounds. For 14 years, he represented the JCC Association on the U.S. Olympic Committee, contributing to the broader sports community. He has also served on the boards of the Israel Sports Center for the Disabled (Ramat Gan), the URJ 6 Points Sports Academy, and Maccabi USA Sports for Israel. Additionally, he was the Israel Conference Chairman of the North American Alliance of Jewish Youth for two years. He currently sits on the Board of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and is a Vice President.
In 2005, Silberman was honored with the prestigious Hershey's STRIVE Award by the National Council of Youth Sports as the United States Youth Sports Administrator of the Year.
Lenny Silberman holds the distinction of being the only Jewish communal professional to be recognized locally, nationally, and internationally for his contributions. His honors include induction into the Western Pennsylvania Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, acknowledgment by the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in the United States, and recognition by the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in Israel.
