DESCRIPTION:

In 1921 swimmer Gerard Blitz set a World record in the 400-meter backstroke (5:59.2), a mark that stood for six years.

Blitz competed at the 1920, 1924, 1928 and 1936 Olympics. He won a water polo silver medal at the 1920 Games, and a swimming bronze in the 100m backstroke. His older brother and team member Maurice were also water polo silver medalists that year.

At 1924 Olympics, Gerard repeated the water polo silver medal. He did not medal again until the 1936 Games in Berlin, where his Belgian team earned the water polo bronze.

In 1990 Blitz was inducted in the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
