Ben Helfgott is the only known survivor of a Nazi concentration camp to compete in the Olympic Games. He captained the British Olympic Weightlifting Teams of 1956 and 1960.
The Polish-born Briton was England’s 11-Stone Champion in 1954,
and Lightweight titleholder in 1955, 1956, and 1958. He was also a member of the British 1954, 1955, 1958, and 1959 World Championships teams.
Helfgott won the Lightweight gold medals at the 1950, 1953, and 1957 World Maccabiah Games. He was the only member of his
family to survive the Buchenwald concentration camp.
