Between 1970 and 1973, Hungarian swimmer Andrea Gyarmati earned 23 individual titles and set eleven national, nineteen European and two World records.

In 1972, she set a World record in the 100-meter butterfly in the Munich Olympics semi-final, winning a silver medal in the final event. She also won a bronze in the 100m backstroke.

At the European Championships two years earlier, Andrea won gold medalist in both the 100m butterfly and 200m backstroke, plus silvers in the 100m backstroke and 4x100m relay.

Her mother and coach Eva Székely (IJSHOF 1981) were a six-time World record-holder and 1952 Olympic breaststroke gold medalist. Her father, Dezso Gyarmati, amassed eight Olympic water polo medals for Hungary, five of them gold, as a player and coach.
