Alain Calmat won the Men’s World Figure Skating Championship in 1965. He was also a silver medalist at the 1964 Winter Olympic Games and silver medalist in the World Championships of 1963 and 1964.
He captured the European Figure Skating Championships in 1962, 1963, and 1966.
At the 1968 Winter Olympic Games in Grenoble, France, Calmat was selected to carry the torch and light the Olympic flame. He was the first and, to date, the only Jew ever to be so honored.
