Andres Cantor: The Iconic Jewish Voice Behind Argentina’s World Cup Glory

Andres Cantor has called World Cup soccer since 1979. His trademark ¡GOOOOOL! is synonymous with Spanish-language broadcasting, but what most viewers don’t know is that Cantor, born in Buenos Aires to Polish-Jewish parents who fled persecution, was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2025.

Over 45 years in broadcasting, Cantor has become the face of Spanish-language soccer coverage. He won nine Emmy Awards covering multiple World Cups and Olympic Games for Telemundo and Universo. In 1994, the American Sportscaster Association named him Sports Personality of the Year. The 2004 Broadcasting & Cable/Multichannel News Lifetime Achievement Award in Hispanic Television followed. Most recently, in 2020, the National Soccer Hall of Fame recognized him with the Colin Jose Media Award for his significant long-term contributions to soccer in the U.S.

During the current World Cup cycle, Cantor continues to anchor Telemundo’s Spanish-language broadcasts. His influence across soccer commentary spans multiple continents, making him one of the sport’s most recognizable voices across any language.
